Private mode

Keep dApps away from your real wallet. With Private mode on, sites connect to a separate private wallet instead.

Every site you connect to learns your wallet address, and with it your balance and history. Private mode stops that. While it's on, sites connect to a separate private wallet instead of the wallet you're using. A site never sees your real address, and a bad site can only reach what's in the private wallet.

Private mode is about what sites see. It doesn't hide amounts on your screen (that's Hidden Balances), and it doesn't make your payments private (that's Private sends).

One switch in the wallet picker.

Turn it on

Any of these flips the same switch:

  • Tap your wallet name at the top, then Private Mode.
  • Settings → Security & privacy → Private Mode.
  • On the Chrome extension, press Alt Shift P while Morsel is open.

The first time, the Private wallet sheet opens and shows your private wallet's address.

While it's on, your picture at the top gets a violet ring, and a shield with Private replaces your address.

Your private wallet

  • It's made from your own wallet, one way: you can always get it back by restoring your wallet, but nobody can trace it back to you from the chain.
  • It's the same private wallet each time, until you choose Start a new private wallet. After that, sites see a fresh address. Your earlier private wallet keeps its balance.
  • Keep only what you need for the sites you use in it. To put money in without linking it to your real wallet, use Fund privately, which sends through the Private Route. See Private sends.

What changes while it's on

  • Sites connect to your private wallet. Each site still asks for approval, and every signature still goes through Morsel's approval screen.
  • In the phone browser, a site you approve in Private mode can reconnect to your private wallet next time. To start over with no approvals, choose Start a new private wallet. On the Chrome extension, connections made in Private mode aren't saved at all.
  • Send hides My wallets, so you don't link your wallets by accident.
  • Notes and chat messages on payments are off, and Chats are paused. They'd tie your activity to your identity.

When Morsel locks, Private mode switches off. When you unlock, it comes back on if you left it on.

Limits

Private mode makes it harder to link your activity to you. It doesn't make you anonymous: everything the private wallet does is public on-chain, and how you fund it matters. It also can't protect you from someone who has your unlocked phone.
